Meet the New VW Passat

Volkwagen's New 2017 Passat is Available Now at McKenna 'Surf City' Volkswagen in Huntington Beach

For an upscale, yet affordable, European sedan experience, look to the 2017 Volkswagen Passat. The German automaker's midsize sedan offers a well-appointed and comfortable interior, refined styling and excellent driving manners and superb handling. The 2017 Passat definitely stands out from the rest of the midsize crowd, which includes more plain-vanilla offerings like the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry and Ford Fusion.

Power & Performance

The 2017 VW Passat offers two very capable engine options. The standard motor is a 1.8-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque and delivers a very respectable fuel economy rating of 23 mpg city and 34 mpg highway. For quicker acceleration on the on-ramps and in the passing lane, opt for the bigger 3.6-liter V6. It's paired a highly responsive, dual-clutch automatic transmission and steering-wheel-mounted paddle shifter if you prefer to be more engaged. The V6 pumps out 280 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque and still manages to achieve 20 mpg city and 28 mpg highway.

Features & Options

The 2017 Passat comes in four flavors, including the S, R-Line, SE and SEL Premium.

Even the base Passat S is pretty well-equipped, with features like dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-speaker audio system, a 5.0-inch touchscreen interface with Bluetooth mobile device connectivity, a rearview camera and a forward collision mitigation system. Step up to the R-Line and you'll enjoy a larger 6.3-inch touchscreen with satellite and HD radio, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, heated front seats and a power-adjustable driver seat and Volkswagen's Car-Net infotainment system that works with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The R-Line also comes with blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert.

The Passat SE ups the ante with larger, 17-inch wheels, a sunroof, keyless ignition, rear air vents and adaptive cruise control. Opt for the Technology Package and your Passat will get LED headlights and taillights as well as foglights, 18-inch wheels, heated front seats, a hands-free trunk opener that can be engaged with a wave of your foot, remote engine start, parking sensors fore and aft and an upgraded eight-speaker audio setup.

At the high end of the Passat line, the SEL Premium edition builds on the SE with the addition of niceties like full leather upholstery, a premium Fender audio system, automated parallel parking and lane departure warning.

Each VW Passat has the sophisticated, subtly European vibe we love, and they each come with a hefty list of special equipment.

  • The Volkswagen Passat S. The base trim in the Passat line comes with a lot of standard features, including automatic headlights, a rearview camera, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 5-inch touchscreen infotainment interface, rear seats that fold in a 60/40 split to expand storage space, and accident-avoiding technology with collision mitigation system and automating braking.
  • The Volkswagen Passat R-Line. The Passat R-Line has its own special style, with larger, 19-inch alloy wheels. It also adds on the earlier trim's features with heated side mirrors, a power-adjusting driver seat, heated front seats, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and MirrorLink smartphone integration, a larger touchscreen interface, a blind-spot monitor, and rear cross-traffic alert.
  • The Volkswagen Passat SE. This upper trim loses the R-Line's special stylings and returns to smaller, 17-inch wheels. It also adds to the list of features with traffic-adapting cruise control, a sunroof, keyless entry and ignition, and rear air vents. Additionally, there's an amazing Technology package that can be ordered for this trim level to really up the ante on your luxurious features.
  • The Volkswagen Passat SEL Premium. The top trim in the Passat family takes all of the earlier models' features, including the SE trim's optional Technology package, and adds to them. It comes standard with navigation, heated backseats, an upgraded sound system, power-folding mirrors, automated parallel parking assist, and a lane departure warning.

The Volkswagen Passat also comes with your choice of two engines. The standard engine for every trim is a turbocharged 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. There's also an optional 3.6-liter V6 with and a six-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission, but that can only be ordered on the top two SE and SEL Premium trims.
