2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevrolet Traverse Comparison in Huntington Beach, CA

In the three-row SUV segment, the Volkswagen Atlas stands above the crowd. It combines three spacious rows of seating with the European refinement and precision engineering that you've come to expect from Volkswagen. Of course, there are other three-row SUVs around, too, like the Chevrolet Traverse. But when you compare the two side-by-side, as we do here, we think you'll find that Volkswagen has much more to offer.

2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevy Traverse: Design

Volkswagen is committed to bringing you the best, which is why the 2020 Atlas comes with features like LED and roof rails, even on the entry level. These features make your drive safer and more convenient, and they have something in common: neither feature is standard on the entry-level Chevy Traverse. In fact, they're not even available on the entry-level model.

When it comes to interior design, the Chevrolet Traverse does have more seating: it can fit up to 8 occupants, while the VW Atlas fits up to 7. But each passenger will likely be more comfortable inside the Volkswagen Atlas. Despite the greater overall interior volume of the Chevrolet Traverse, the VW Atlas has more headroom in the second and third rows, as well as greater first- and third-row legroom. The result is a cabin that feels much roomier.

2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevy Traverse: Technology

At the entry level, the technology you'll find in these SUVs is similar. But, once again, Volkswagen brings it with the premium features. The 2020 Atlas offers a 12-speaker Fender® Premium Audio System, while the Chevrolet Traverse maxes out at just ten speakers. The 2020 VW Atlas also offers another feature unmatched by anything the Traverse has: Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. This customizable digital screen replaces the traditional instrument cluster, and it can display information just the way you like it, making for a personalized drive.

2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevy Traverse: Performance

The Chevrolet Traverse comes with just one engine, but the Volkswagen Atlas gives you a choice between two. Though the engine in the Chevrolet Traverse is more powerful than the VW Atlas engines, the Atlas is lighter. What's more, the extra strength in the Chevrolet doesn't necessarily increase capability. When the Volkswagen Atlas is equipped with the available V6 engine, the VW Atlas and the Chevy Traverse both have a towing capacity of up to 5,000 pounds.

2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevy Traverse: Driver Assistance Technology

The Volkswagen Atlas is a family SUV, and nothing is more important than your family's safety. That's why even entry-level 2020 Volkswagen Atlas models come standard with a number of driver assistance features. Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Traffic Alert help you get a better view of areas you might not otherwise see well, and the Forward Collision Warning and Autonomous Emergency Braking features help mitigate or even avoid collisions. Though these features are available in certain 2020 Chevrolet Traverse, they're not even options in the entry-level trim.

2020 VW Atlas vs 2020 Chevy Traverse: Value

The 2020 Chevrolet Traverse has a starting MSRP that's lower than that of the 2020 Volkswagen Atlas--and, looking at the two SUVs, it's easy to see why. The entry-level Chevy Traverse L doesn't come with features like LED lights or driver assistance technology. Meanwhile, these features come standard on the VW Atlas. Equipping a Chevy Traverse with some of these basic features will increase the price, usually to more than the entry-level Atlas.
